When working with new business owners, I am often asked, “Do I have to blog to promote my business? What should I blog about? What do I do when I’ve run out of ideas?”
The answer is yes, you should have a blog! Blogging is a great way to connect with your potential audience, give them a glimpse of who you are, and gain trust and respect as an expert in your field. By providing great content (and the right content), you can build a list of loyal readers who feel like they know & trust you, and are therefore more likely to purchase your products and services.
I used to feel that coming up with fresh content for my blog was tough and draining. Then I figured out a system for coming up with tons of ideas, and I have been on a roll ever since! And you can use it too!
The secret to great blog posts
The key to coming up with great content is to put yourself in your readers’ shoes. Considering your website’s topic or industry, what do your readers want to know? What are they curious about? What questions are they dying to have answered? What stories can you share that will help them connect with you and your business? Then take those answers and break them into bite-sized posts.
Five questions to inspire blog post ideas
If you need a little more inspiration for blog post ideas, I’ve put together the questions I use to come up with great article ideas:
- What is special about my topic/product/service?
- What are the top questions I am often asked by my readers?
- Are there any “behind-the-scenes” or personal stories that I can share about my topic/product/service?
- Do I have any hot tips or resources that I can share with my readers?
- Are there any holidays or current events that are affecting my business or my readers that I can discuss?
Each answer that you come up with is a potential blog post. Keep a notebook handy to jot down your ideas so that you’re never stuck not knowing what to write. Try taking some of your ideas and incorporating them into a monthly series. For example, a craft how-to, an FAQ series, a monthly product review, or a “what I’m reading” series. Get creative. Ask yourself what your readers would be interested in. A monthly series keeps your readers coming back, and makes your job easier!
Keep an eye on your blog traffic, and note which of your posts become the most popular. Then write more of that style or content. Don’t be afraid to try new things and ask for feedback. And, of course, keep writing!
