Today’s entrepreneur is David Salzman of Fun to Eat Fruit.
When and why did you start your business?
We started in 2007. We felt there had to be a way to make healthy items such as fruit more “fun” to eat in order to help battle childhood obesity.
For corporations we wanted to offer a unique healthy item for their employees and tradeshow traffic.
What do you love about being an entrepreneur?
I love to create my own opportunities.
Describe your business in 20 words or less.
Fun to eat fruit levels the playing field in the battle against childhood obesity.
Fruit always had a tough fight against superhero and cartoon licensed candy and chocolate. Our edible inked images on fruit make apples, pears, nectarines and plums fun to eat!
Where do you get your inspiration from and how do you stay inspired?
I feel I am good listener. People offer a wealth of ideas. I try to determine the great ideas from the mundane and make them happen!
What is your biggest success or accomplishment you’re most proud of in your business?
We supply schools in our district. The kids will only eat Fun to Eat Fruit!
What advice would you give other entrepreneurs when they are first starting out?
Don’t give up. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. That is how you learn to improve product, production, marketing.
What is one mistake that you made that you really learned from and what did you learn?
Follow-up, follow-up, follow-up. Never stop learning and listening!
Where do you see your company in three years?
I see Fun to Eat Fruit sold throughout North America.
Do you sell your products wholesale and, if so, what is one strategies that you use to get your products in stores?
Partner with an existing distributor. Their existing channel of distribution helps open tremendous potential opportunities.
What is one thing you wish you knew about being an entrepreneur when you first started out?
Don’t stop smiling.
